Divine Vengeance

Hebrews 10:30-31 For we know [God] who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

The Holy God of the Bible is certainly the God of love, but He is also the God of wrath. Since His wrath is upon all who sin, and since all are sinners (Rom. 3:23), all are under His just wrath. Passages like Deuteronomy 32:35-36, quoted here in 10:30 (cf. Rom. 12:19), reveal that God has a day of judgement in store for all who reject Him. He says, “Vengeance in Mine, I will repay.” God could have said, “I love all, and nothing anyone does will ever stop Me from saving everyone in spite of how much they hate Me.” Nothing like this is ever said in Scripture by God. The truth of Deuteronomy 32:36 is that “the Lord will judge His people” (Heb. 10:30).

But in His grace, God became man in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. He lived as a human, and He overcame every temptation known to mankind. He was, in a word, sinless (John 8:48). Jesus could therefore offer Himself to God the Father as the perfect Lamb of God (John 1:29) for the satisfaction of His wrath. When Jesus did this, willfully giving His life on the cross, He took God’s wrath on Himself, satisfying God. In other words, man sinned; Jesus paid the fine. His actions are therefore a legal action, relieving sinners of the penalty for their sins. All they must do is claim it by trusting in Christ. So there it is—God’s wrath satisfied in His Son Jesus Christ!

For the ignorant person who never hears the gospel, God’s wrath is still just. After all, all are sinners, and sinners deserve judgment. And judgment they will receive. But for those who hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and believe it for a time, only to later turn away from it and become apostate, the wrath of God will be all the more intense, for God will take “vengeance” on them—the act of harming someone in return for an injury or injustice. There is no doubt this is what God will do, for He emphasizes such, saying, “I will repay.” God’s judgment will be based on what each has been given. Those with more knowledge will be judged more severely.

Truly, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (v. 31). The term “terrifying” (Gr. phoberos) is the same term used in v. 27 in reference to the wrathful judgment of God—the fury of a fire which will consume His adversaries, specifically in this context those who profess to love Christ but who later turn away from Him. Terrifying expectation? A consuming fire? Divine judgment? Certainly God is loving, but He is also full of wrath towards unbelievers, specifically those who reject Him outright. Jonathan Edwards captured this scene somewhat in his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”:

There are the black clouds of God’s wrath now hanging directly over your heads, full of the dreadful storm, and big with thunder; and were it not for the restraining hand of God it would immediately burst forth upon you. The sovereign pleasure of God for the present, stays His rough wind; otherwise it would come with fury, and your destruction would come like a whirlwind, and you would be like the chaff of the summer threshing floor.

The truth is, God’s wrath is upon everyone, and justly so, for all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Rom. 3:23). But God in His grace, has given us Jesus Christ to trust and receive by faith (Rom. 6:23). He alone is our peace, having satisfied God’s wrath with His death on the cross (cf. Rom. 5:1ff.), paying the penalty for our sin-debt to God in full (John 19:30).

Food For Thought
The warnings in the Epistle to the Hebrews are not for those who commit ignorant sins; they are for those who willfully deny Jesus Christ after coming to a knowledge of who He truly is. Only a God of love would warn His true children to remain true to ensure their salvation. He would continually explain His superiority over others so that they would be fully informed and not miss the mark, and He would send pastors and preachers to convey this vital message. This is what He did through letters like the Hebrews epistle! Yes, God’s Word to us is a love letter—a warning no doubt, but a love letter extraordinaire. Let us go forth and warn others, loving them, with the truth of the gospel and the consequences for rejecting it.
