Faith That God Made All
Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
Prior to anything tangible existing, God was existing—all three members of the Trinity dwelling together in eternity in perfect love and unity, lacking nothing. Everything that this one God existing eternally in three distinct persons chose to create was created for His pleasure and glory. Nothing was needed for God to be complete, yet God chose to create—out of nothing.
God, being outside of all created things, in an instant created: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). God thus created time (beginning), space (heavens), and matter (earth)—three creations that are contingent upon one another, for there can be no matter without space and no space and matter without time. Time itself is triune, being past, present, and future; as is space, being length, width, and height; as is matter, being solid, liquid, and gas. God, being eternal, is outside of all these things and Himself needing no creation, for He is eternal. That which is eternal has, by definition, no beginning. And how do we “understand” (v. 3) and draw such conclusions, or even begin to think about such matters? Because God, enveloping logic and reason, gives that which is created in His image, namely mankind (Gen. 1:26-28), such abilities. How else could logic and reason have existence?
So, for mankind to “understand” the “worlds” (Gr. aiōn), that is, everything that exists anywhere and everywhere, He has to acknowledge something higher than himself, namely God. Man has to recognize that no man, alien, or crystal could exist on its own and make the “worlds” that his intellect perceives. What made the worlds is far above that which is created and understood by mankind. Thankfully, this God kept a record of His first actions with regard to the creation of the heavens and the earth. In addition, He lovingly preserved the account of His creation in the Book of Genesis, specifically in Genesis 1 where God was the only being that existed. Since no one else was around to witness His actions, He recorded what He did, being specific about each detail of every day—seven of them—explaining what and how He created.
Genesis 1 records that over the course of six 24-hour days, by God’s word alone He created everything that exists out of nothing. Hence, these “worlds were prepared by the word of God” (v. 3). Notably, “word” (Gr. rhēma) here refers to a spoken word, meaning that God simply called all things into existence. Yet elsewhere it is seen that Jesus, the “word (Gr. logos) of God” (John 1:1-2), is actually the Creator God: “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:3). Also, Hebrews 1:2 says of Jesus whom God the Father “…appointed heir of all things, through whom also [God] made the world.” The Apostle Paul likewise wrote of Christ, saying, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Col. 1:16).
So, both by the spoken word of God and by the incarnate word of God (Jesus), God created. Those with godly faith therefore know that “what is seen was not made out of things which are visible” (Heb. 11:3). It was God’s word calling all things into being. Who believes this? Those who live by faith— “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (v. 1).
Food For Thought
God has never demanded of us that we believe the unbelievable. After all, with God as the Sovereign over all, what could actually be unbelievable? He created the universe and all it contains by His word. Would it therefore be difficult for Him to become a man, die, and rise again? We can’t prove God, but the evidence for God is overwhelming. Only a fool denies such.
