The Mystery of God Unveiled

1 Corinthians 2:6-9 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Though Paul did not speak with worldly wisdom, he did speak wisely. The wisdom he espoused is understood only by the “mature” (teleios)—the morally “complete"—those who simply know Christ as Lord and Savior, having placed their faith in Him alone. The words of God spoken from the Scriptures are wise only in the eyes of those who actually know and love Christ, the Son of God. To the unsaved, the Bible is at best taken with the proverbial grain of salt and at worst as pure idiocy. Either way, the unsaved do not listen to God’s words. In v. 6, Paul refers to “the rulers of this age” as being among them. These were the leading men of the society, both the political and the philosophical trailblazers. They are said to be “passing away,” for they, and all unbelievers, are in the process of being abolished by their own unbelief.

In v. 7, Paul claims to speak “God’s wisdom,” doing so in a “mystery” (mustērion), a reference to something once hidden but now made manifest. David Garland says, “The mystery is truth revealed by God, not truth discovered by human investigation and argument. Humans do not find this truth; it finds them.” More specifically, it is God’s elect to whom the truth finds, for God hides His own wisdom from willful unbelievers (cf. Matt. 13:10-17).

In v. 8, Paul says this divine hidden wisdom revealed to His people was “predestined before the ages to our glory.” So, before the creation of anything, God predetermined that He would bring His elect people to glory through the wisdom of Christ crucified. This divine wisdom is a wisdom that none of the “rulers of this age”—philosophers, political rulers, and perhaps demons, had understood. For if they had any understanding of God’s wisdom, “they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” The very fact that Jesus was tried and convicted of a crime by the leaders of the Jewish nation and executed by the Romans, an intellectually powerful and militarily crushing empire, proves that the smartest of people through the ages have no fear of God. So, if “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Prov. 1:7), they lacked it.

In v. 9 Paul paraphrases the meaning of Isaiah 64:4 which is to say that God’s wisdom cannot be obtained through man’s eye or ear: “no eye has seen, no ear has heard.” No matter how sophisticated or intellectual a person is, God’s wisdom can never be obtained through our efforts to know it, for “no mind has conceived.” In fact, man’s thoughts are contrary to God’s wisdom until God calls us to Christ, and his faculties cannot comprehend “what God has prepared for those who love Him.” Only God can flip that switch. One thus wonders how God can hold unbelievers accountable for their unbelief, for without divine enablement to believe, how can they be responsible? That answer will remain a mystery to us on this side of glory.

Food For Thought
If you accept the words of Scripture, you are counted as “mature,” for you know Jesus Christ as Lord. You can rejoice over the fact that God has enlightened you to true wisdom in contrast to man’s philosophies. As in Paul’s day, world leaders still reject Christ as Lord (is there a world leader who is a Christian?). It is impossible for their eyes, ears, and minds to understand what God has prepared for those who love Him. Perhaps God will use you to shine His light?
