Exposed Before God
Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
Hebrews 4:12 reflects back on all that the author has been thinking in his epistle regarding the teachings of the OT which he calls “the word of God.” He believes the OT, as the “word of God,” is living, it is active, and it is sharp. Like a sharp, double-edged sword, the word of God can cut a man’s soul from his spirit in the same way a sharp sword can separate joints from marrow—bones from sinews. In light of the author’s high view of Scripture, how sad it is that so many today regard the Bible as little more than a history book filled with myths, half-truths, and legends about some heroes from the past in Israel.
The Bible, however, being like a two-edged sword, penetrates beneath all hypocrisy in a person’s life, exposes the excuses man gives for acting the way he does, and even challenges the Christian’s lack of diligence. Just hearing God’s word reveals one’s moral recklessness and self-delusions common in those who profess faith in Christ but who fail to follow and obey Him.
The word of God actually “pierces” the soul and spirit of man. Now if the soul of man is the lower part of his animal instincts and his natural and sinful tendencies, then his spirit would be his higher part, the dead part he is born with that requires an act of God to be made alive (cf. Eph 2:1-4). This is the “image of God” (Gen. 1:26-28) tarnished by sin that only God can fix. God’s word thus penetrates both soul and spirit even into the “joints and marrow”—the soft tissue, or innards of a human being. This is clearly poetic language, paralleling a literal sword going through human joints and marrow with the Bible that cuts into man’s deepest depravities.
The final phrase in v. 12 says that God’s word is “able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” To “judge” (Gr. kritikos) is “to sift out and analyze evidence,” akin the English word “critical.” The word of God thus criticizes, analyzes, and sifts out the intentions of man’s wicked nature, laying everything open and bare before God.
Verse 13 says that “there is no creature hidden from [God’s] sight” but that all things are “open and laid bare” to God. The word for “open” (Gr. gumnos) here means “naked; stripped; uncovered.” So, nothing is hidden from God. How frightening! For God sees every part of us, especially the part of us that we keep hidden from everyone else. Nothing is hidden from Him. Nothing. All things are “laid bare” (Gr. trachēlizō), a term that means “throat.” In its verbal form, as it is in v. 13, it means “to seize by the throat.” This imagery recalls warriors and wild animals exposing their victim’s neck and throat in preparation to slit the throat. Perhaps the writer has the same imagery, for in God’s presence, we are naked and totally vulnerable to God’s will, whether we believe that or not. God is said to be “Him with whom we have to do,” or better put, “the One to whom we are accountable” (NLT). No man is autonomous, for every human being is accountable to God. His Spirit-inspired word has been given to draw us to repentance.
Food For Thought
In the song Simple Man, Charlie Daniels says, “Well you know what’s wrong with the world today? People done gone and put their Bibles away!” How true and how sad. Even some pastors tend to care little about what the Bible teaches, using it as a pretext to defend a point in their sermonettes for Christianettes. But if man’s problem is unbelief, and if unbelief is exposed by Bible-preaching, then the answer to man’s problem is obvious. Let God’s word be preached! And let us be diligent to enter God’s rest through trusting in Christ’s written and preached words.
