Our Omnipotent (All-Powerful) God
Psalm 139:13-18 You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; 16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.
The Psalmist (David) would have had a rudimentary knowledge of the human body in his day, but with the limited knowledge he had, he was able to recognize how wonderful the human body is. He obviously saw how God had “formed my inward parts” and “wove me in my mother’s womb.” For this he gave thanks to God, for he understood how wonderfully he had been made, literally knitted together by God. He saw that God’s work in making the human body made the human of great worth to God. What David said, any human could say, for all are “fearfully and wonderfully made… skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth.” Though at one time “unformed,” every human being was known and “seen” by God “in secret,” that is, before anything about the human was materially formed. Furthermore, David also marveled at how his own days, as are all the days of each individual who has ever lived or will live, are numbered and known to God—days “ordained” for them and watched over by God (cf. vv. 1-4).
With the slight knowledge of the human body that caused David to marvel, modern scientific advances have revealed far greater insight into physiology—that which God “formed” and “wove” together in “secret.” First, consider the organization and nerve cells of the human brain. The brain changes, adapts, and repairs itself throughout life while commanding and explaining all things to the human body. With the brain Paul commands that “whatever is true… honorable… just… pure… lovely… commendable, if there any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things (Phil 4:8, ESV, italics mine).
Second, consider the seeing eye—a living camera of sorts. The eye takes in and shields light while creating a picture for the brain to synthesize. All the working pieces of the eye and muscles that surround them, six on each eye, work in perfect coordination to home in on any given object. Any misalignment, and double vision would result. Furthermore, the eyes are self-cleaning, both creating tears and sucking them backwards into the nasal cavity. How wonderful that those tears that sometimes appear due to life’s hurts and distresses, will finally be wiped away by God from every eye, and there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain (Rev. 21:4).
Consider the hearing ear, taking in sounds from the vibrations and pulses in the air. Using three tiny bones, the thinly made eardrum, and microscopic hairs that convert signals at the molecular level, the ear is an astonishing feat of creative engineering. No wonder God uses this organ to bring people to faith, for faith comes from hearing (Rom. 10:17). Truly, the hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made both of them (Prov. 20:12).
Food For Thought
God created each of us with love and care, created for Him in His image. God even has a book about all of our days, even our death. Other books noted in the Bible contain records of one’s tears (Ps. 56:8), one of a remembrance of faithfulness (Mal. 3:16), a book of the living—those who are not dead (Ps. 69:28), a book of those who will inherit eternal life (Phil. 4:3; Rev. 13:8; 17:8; 20:15), and books containing man’s works (Dan. 7:10; Rev. 20:12). Hence David’s praise for the omnipotence of God in vv. 17-18. He was astounded and awed by God’s power!
