The Heavens Declare God
Psalm 19:1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
People often wonder about those who will never hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Are they going to spend eternity in hell having never had the opportunity to hear the gospel? Speaking to this, Psalm 19:1 claims that all can know of God! Commenting on this, Romans 1:20 says, “For [God’s] invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (italics mine). So, those who fail to acknowledge the Creator do so willingly, and because of this God’s wrath is upon them. It is the creation itself—God’s own handiwork, that speaks, loudly proclaiming God’s existence. This means that God has not left any human being without some form of communication from Him. All are accountable to acknowledge Him.
When the Apostle Paul visited Lystra in Acts 14, he told the largely Gentile audience about the God “who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them… in the generations gone by [God] permitted all the nations to go their own ways; and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness” (vv. 15-17). Paul told the same thing to the pagan philosophers in Athens, Greece showing them from the creation itself that there is one God “who made the world and everything in it” (Acts 17:22ff.).
It is God’s unseen attributes, namely His “eternal power” (Rom. 1:20) by which all human beings are made aware of Him and are thus without excuse for their failure to believe. God’s eternal power, or omnipotence, refers to His supreme control reflected in His creation of all things. It is His power that brought it forth. Sadly, many “suppress” this truth (Rom. 1:18) and exchange God’s truth for a lie—honoring pseudo-science over God. It is God’s “divine nature,” along with His power, through which His gracious provisions are offered to His creation. Paul referred to this when he told the people of Lystra: “for [God] did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17).
A look at the creation with just a simple glance should astound the average person. The design and wonder of the created universe is absolutely awesome! Plant a seed, and a tree grows—sometimes way up into the sky. Look closely at an insect, and see the intricacies that make it what it is. A star in the heavens is so much larger than one can imagine and so far away that it boggles the mind. Yet there are countless trillions of them, most of which are not even visible to the human eye. The wonders of the universe and its contents are truly remarkable.
Also, the eye, the ear, and the nose are astonishing in their complexity. The hand is a complex machine that is more multifaceted than a crane that aids in the building of skyscrapers. And the crane itself was put together by the human hand! Observe the growth of a baby in its mother’s womb, the sexual reproductive system in the human body, and language itself. Look out at the stars and observe the orbit of the planets in the solar system, the rising and setting of the sun, the changing of the seasons, the birds that navigate by the stars, the spectacular changing of the seasons, and natural disasters that man cannot tame. Certainly, “ the heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Ps. 19:1).
Only a fool would deny that there is a God (Ps. 14:1), for only a fool would deny that which they know to be true—that God exists! How obvious it is that God has made Himself known to all, both in His creation and through His Son Jesus Christ whom He sent to reveal Himself (John 1:18). Therefore, it is the ultimate insult for man, with the revelation of God through the creation, to reject God’s existence. God is thus justified for bringing down wrath on unbelievers.
